I've gone from being quoted by my children to CNN!

Photobucket
Yours truly was quoted in an article in Parenting Magazine. As it turns out, said article has been featured on CNN's Top Stories in the Living Section! The article is When to have your 2nd or 3rd kid? Article highlights include: spacing kids include two-under-two, three years apart, and four years or more. Each split has its own benefits and drawbacks. Some moms want to replicate the tight bonds they have with their brothers or sisters.  In the article, I shared a time when Tyler tried to give Emily goldfish snacks when she was only a few weeks old.

Conversations With Emily Grace

For several nights I've been telling Tyler that I need to clip his fingernails when he gets out of the bath tub.  By the time I get him out, dried and clothes on, I forget about the 4 inch fingernails.  Last night I decided to just clip them while he was in the tub.  I did so and then when he got out, left them laying on the edge of the bath tub.
Photobucket
Fast forward to this morning.  I was getting Emily dressed and she emerged with the fingernail clippers.  She knows that I do not allow her to play with them, so she came to me and said, "These hut (hurt) me?"  I said, "Yes ma'am."

She proceeded to hand them to me and asked me if I would clip her fingernails.  I told her that they didn't need clipped just yet.  She then proceeded to ask me to clip her finger toes (toe nails).  Fortunately they didn't need clipped so we moved on to her dirty diaper.

Five Important Lessons For A Pencil

Photobucket* Everything you do will always leave a mark.

* You can always correct the mistake you make.

* What is important is inside of you.

* In life, you will undergo painful sharpening, which will only make you better.

* To be the best pencil, you must allow yourself to be held and guided by the hand that holds you.

We all need to be constantly sharpened. This may encourage you to know that you are a special person, with unique God-given talents and abilities. Only you can fulfill the purpose which you were born to accomplish. Never allow yourself to get discouraged and think that your life is insignificant and cannot be changed and, like the pencil, always remember that the most important part of who you are, is what's inside of you.

Tinker Bell and The Great Fairy Rescue

Photobucket
Did you know that Tinker Bell was honored with a Star on Hollwood's Walk of Fame on Tuesday, September 21, 2010? Tinker Bell’s twinkling star ceremony coincided with the debut of Disney Fairies’ latest feature film (from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment), “Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue”. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is an internationally-recognized Hollywood icon. With about 24 induction ceremonies annually broadcast around the world, the constant reinforcement provided to the public has made the Walk of Fame a top visitor attraction. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce continues to administer the Walk as the representative of the City of Los Angeles. The Walk is a tribute to all of those who worked so hard to develop the concept and to maintain this world-class tourist attraction.

PhotobucketBefore Tink met Peter Pan and the lost boys, she met Lizzie - a girl who believed in fairies with all of her heart. Their two worlds collide and Tink risks her own safety and the safety of her fairy friends as the Fairies set out on an adventure to London to save one of their own! Lizzy is quite the character and reminded me so much of myself when I was a kid, especially her little "Scientific Fairy Research Journal". I have two girls (age 8 and 2). They LOVE Tinker Bell. Even my 5 year old son loves the Tinker Bell movies. He probably wouldn't want to announce that on the school playground, but really he does!

I enjoy the fact that Tinker Bell is no longer just Peter Pan's little non-talking Fairy friend but, along with her Fairy Friends she is one of Disney's most successful franchises! Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue is available now on Disney's Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack. By clicking here, you can print a coupon to save $10 off your Combo Pack! Just a little "thank you" gift for my readers and Disney Fans.

Humbled and Grateful

Photobucket
On this beautiful Sunday morning, I sit here at my computer humbled.  I am almost at a loss for words as how to describe the way I feel.  I have posted all week about Get Down Downtown and the fund raising booth we were going to have for Arkansas Susan G Komen.  We sold pink lemonade and cookies for a cause.  My mother-in-law is a God send.  I am so lucky to have such a wonderful, dedicated, hard working woman in my life!  She was on the phone and pounding the pavement all week last week collecting donated items and funds for this cause.  Thanks to her, we had gift certificates to local restaurants, jewelry stores, and even a day spa donated to us.  We sold tickets for a dollar each for a chance to win one of those prizes.  We gave breast cancer survivors free chances, of course.  (Winners have not yet been drawn)  Sexton Foods, Fanny Brown, and Classic Catering of Harding donated cookies for our cause.  Thanks to them we did not have to do any baking.  Sexton Foods donated 40 dozen cookies made fresh Thursday morning in their awesome bakery and I tell you what, people LOVED those cookies!  The pink lemonade was donated by various businesses in town as well.  We also received lots of monetary donations to which the rest of the supplies and decorations needed were purchased.  We ended up with a final tally of $950 donated at the Get Down Downtown, Main Street Celebration!

As I sat down and counted out all of those ones and fives last night, I was overwhelmed with emotion.  You see, I do not have breast cancer, in fact I have never lost a loved one to breast cancer.  I have, however, lost loved ones to other cancer.  Cancer is bad...no matter what form of it you get.  I was overwhelmed by the fact that I am surrounded by so many people filled with love. This money was not collected in one hundred dollar bills. It was mostly collected one or two dollars at a time and that is simply amazing! My family were huge supporters of this cause.  My husband worked hard to help set up this booth IN THE RAIN!!!  He also did all of the running we needed him to do no matter what we needed and when.  He never once complained.  What a trooper he was.  My mother-in-law collected donations, watched kiddos, and was there every step of the way.  She also made some awesome strawberry cupcakes with pink icing and pink ribbon sprinkles.  Those things sold like hot cakes!  They were fresh out of the oven Saturday morning.  My team mates went above and beyond to make sure this booth was successful.  Amber Carson was my booth neighbor with Re-Zest your nest so she helped me to get things set up like they needed to be and made things look nice and presentable.  If it weren't for Amber, we would not have been at Get Down Downtown, so I owe her a HUGE thank you.  My sister, Mandy was also there for the set up.  It was a bit stressful at first but once we got it all taken care of, we were golden.  She was also there ALL day Saturday.  I had to leave for a bit, and she had things under control.  April Odom, my other sister also had my back in my absence!  In fact, she and Mandy almost had things broken down when I got back and we just had to carry it all to the truck.  Thanks to the muscle of Eddie Boone, also for making that happen!  My sisters in Christ, Chelsey Dodson and Kylah Robinson were also troopers and stuck it out Saturday with us.  Without the hard work of these girls, we could have never pulled this off.  Crystal Beach also worked on Friday night while our girls were "Getting Down" at the stage having fun dancing to the live entertainment.  Words cannot say how proud I am of all who showed up and helped out, no matter how big or small you think your contribution was, it could not have happened without the hands of each individual who helped out and that is the truth.

I have many more pictures to post and much more to say on this subject, but I have another busy day ahead of me so for now I'll just leave you with a big thank you!!!

Emily Loves Dora

Emily has blossomed into quite the character these days. She is showing signs of potty training. Sometimes she will tell me if she needs to go potty, and other times she will run from me if I ask her. Yesterday this conversation occured:

Emily: "Mommy, I poo-pooed in my diaper."

Me: "You did?! You're not supposed to do that in your diaper, you need to go to the potty and do that like a big girl. I thought you were a big girl?"

Emily: "No, Mommy. I not a big gwirl."

Me: "Oh, so you're a baby."

Emily: "No, mommy I not a baby either."

Me: "Well, if you're not a big girl or a baby, what are you?"

Emily: "I'm two!"

This two year old girl LOVES Dora The Explorer. Shelby had quite the infatuation with this Latino cartoon character as well. Emily got a Dora Cowgirl DVD for her birthday and I think we've watched it over a hundred times since her birthday, less than a month ago! She will pull up a chair in front of the television and use it to stand eye level with Dora and Boots as they're riding on their "horsey".

Conversations With Emily

My two year old daughter, Emily is quite a little talker these days.  She just came from her room where she got her a diaper wipe and proceeded to wipe her nose with it.  She removes it from her face and then informs me that her nose is "leaking".

Photobucket

Shortly after this she hopped on her brother's back as he was lying on the floor and told him to "giddy-up".  As he rode her around the living room, she sang "Old McDonald Had A Farm....E.I.E.I.O!!!

12 Years of Wedded Bliss!

Twelve Years ago today, I married my Knight in Shining Armor.  Brien Black swept me off my feet when we were mere teenagers and now 16 years, 3 kids, and a mortgage later we're living happily ever after.  I love that man with every being of my soul and I thank God every day for putting us together and blessing and enriching our lives daily.  What a wonderful feeling it is to know that I get to spend my days with my soul mate. We a big part of our high school days going dancing at a teenage country dance hall called 89 Country in Cabot, Arkansas.  We were also married there.  It has since been turned into a church and our lives have been filled with many memories and so much love shared between us that I cannot imagine my life without him.  It's been 12 wonderful years of wedded bliss and I would not change one single minute.  I love you, Brien Lynn Black!  Today, tomorrow, and forever.  Thank you for making me your wife.

Conversations With Tyler

The other day as I dropped Emily off at daycare Tyler and Shelby spotted another mom who apparently worked in the medical field as she was wearing scrubs. When we returned to the car, Tyler asked me if I saw the woman wearing a "nurse's uniform". I told him that I did not see her to which he responded,

"Well, she was wearing a nurse's uniform so either she's a doctor or the tooth fairy."

LATSOF - Horseback

Photobucket

Photobucket
The skies were beautifully blue after the parade downtown on Monday to kick off the 2010 White County Fair in Searcy, Arkansas. The older two kids rode horseback in the fair parade while Emily spectated with her father and I. Afterward when we went to pick up Tyler and Shelby she hopped on with Papaw and trotted down the street and back. She was a bit apprehensive at first but on the way back she was all smiles.  I hope you've had a great week and blue skies!  Don't forget to sign Linky Tools if you're participating this week.  Have a beautiful weekend!

2010 White County Fair Parade

It's that time of year again...FAIR TIME!  For us that means, not only cooler weather (hopefully!!!) but, caramel apples, funnel cakes, horses, exhibits, talent shows, rodeos, and demolitions derby!  What's your favorite part of the fair?  Do you like to ride rides, play games, or steer clear of the midway?

Here in White County (Searcy, Arkansas) we kick off the White County Fair with a parade on Monday afternoon.  The fair queen hopefuls, politicians, bands, and lots of local businesses participate in the fun.  Shelby, my 7 year old daughter and Tyler, my 5 year old son both rode horseback in the parade.  Since Shelby decided last minute that she wanted to ride, she rode behind Tyler in a buddy saddle.

Emily and I watched from the sidelines and she was anxiously awaiting the arrival of her siblings on the fair route!

Photobucket
She really enjoyed herself at the parade. We caught lots of candy thrown by politicians, fair royalty, firemen, and even from derby cars! But, she was most excited when she saw the horses because she knew that her brother and sister were coming!
Photobucket
Tyler was winding up to throw some gum to his baby sister. Shelby was just grinning happily as they rode beside their Papaw in the 2010 White County Fair Parade!

Look for more pictures and posts to come as we attend the fair later on this week for the rides, food, midway games, and exhibitor's hall!

Conversations With Emily Grace

Photobucket
Sour Faced Emily!
My little Emily Grace turned two on the 2nd of September.  It is so funny to be able to have conversations with her.  She's been such a blessing in our lives.  I'll never forget what a surprise it was to find out that we were expecting our third child.  When we brought her home, it was quite a change from the norm to get back into a routine with a little baby while my other not so baby girl started Kindergarten.  It was a hard transition, but I wouldn't trade it for anything!  Emily is such a joy to our family!

Last night as she was lying in bed, I heard her begin to call out softly, "Mommy".  I didn't respond thinking that she would eventually drift off to sleep.  We had already had story time and night-night lovies so she was ready for sleep.  She called out a few times more.  I got up and headed to her room when I heard her loudly yell, "Tisha...I'm talkin' to you!!!".

I just couldn't help but laugh.  When I got in there she said she just wanted to show me that her baby was asleep.  I told her that she needed to go to sleep also and she did just that!

Labor Day Invasion of Blood Suckers

Picking seed ticks (teeny tiny newborn ticks) from my two year old daughter was not how I'd envisioned spending my Labor Day, but that's just how I spent a big part of my afternoon.

PhotobucketBrien bought a new automatic corn feeder and decided to take it to his deer camp today to set it up. The kids and I chose to tag along because we had a free day. We were on the go all weekend with birthday parties so we took the opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors. Even Oscar the wiener dog tagged along with us.  Everyone was excited for a road trip followed by adventures in the woods. All three kids were excited.  Of course, 2 year old Emily was just excited because the other two were.  Tyler has a bit of "buck fever" like his father, so he's super excited to get back out in the woods and look for signs of deer, etc.  Shelby just doesn't want Tyler to be doing something without her, so I think that's why she takes such interest.  Don't get me wrong, she loves spending time with her daddy, but being hot and mostly being outdoors is just not her thing.  She's more of a shopper than a hunter, and she gets that from me!

Photobucket
Tyler took the opportunity to scope out the land and check for signs of deer and turkey.  He took his gun, of course just in case.  (Don't worry, this is a toy gun!!!)
Of course while Daddy and Papaw were putting together the feeder, the girls followed Tyler down the path.   Emily and Shelby were enjoying their time together exploring.
Photobucket
Unfortunately, the results of their exploration were the previously mentioned seed ticks.
Photobucket
Brien and Ray were working hard to get the feeder put together. It has an timer so that you can set it to distribute the corn automatically for a set amount of time.  Brien forgot to take his game camera, but hopefully he can get it up there sometime this week so that he can get some digital photographs of what's feeding.

We all managed to make it home a little weary and exhausted, but I think we're finally tick free.  Oscar has the monthly medication that keeps fleas and ticks at bay, so he's fine.  After checking one another like monkeys, I think we're all okay!

So, how'd you spend your Labor Day?!

Little Grips Product Review

Okay, all of you parents out there. I'm about to tell you about a product that's going to make you say, "Why didn't I think of that?"!!! I know when I saw them I thought the same thing. A father decided that when his daughter was having trouble learning to self feed he needed to figure out a simpler way. So, off to the work bench he went and the first prototype was designed for Little Grips. After prayer and a lot of support from family and friends who knew this idea was marketable, Idea Blvd Inc. was created and promises several other products in development that they look forward to introducing in the future. Not just baby products but inventions that will solve some of the most basic annoyances we face on a daily basis. To read more about this company, you can click their About Us Page.

Photobucket

Little Grips Eating Utensils:  What are they, you ask?!  Well, even if you didn't ask I'm about to tell you!  They are designed with your self-feeding toddler in mind.  Any parent can tell you how difficult it is for a toddler to learn to self feed.  Holding the utensil is a tricky task to master (try saying that three times real fast...okay, are you done?  Back to the review).  The Little Grips Utensils are designed with your child's natural movement in mind.  This is good for toddlers because they are not dropping half of their food from their fork or spoon before it reaches their mouth either hitting the table or their clothes.  It's good for you because you are going to have to clean the previously mentioned table and clothes!  In short, it makes feeding time less messy and of course builds their self confidence because they are doing it on their own!
Photobucket
I really wish that this product would have been available to me three children ago. Well, at least two children ago, anyhow. Since Emily has pretty much proclaimed "Big Girl" status, I had a hard time getting her to eat with them. She knew that they were different than the ones we were using, so she really wanted no part of it.  But, she was gracious enough to take her turn as the guinea pig try them out for the sake of the review.

Emily just turned 2 and she used them for the first time to eat eggs at breakfast. At first she was curious to find out what they were. When she realized that she had her own special utensils she was very excited. She stuck her eggs with the fork and got them to her mouth with ease! Emily gives them an thumbs up because she loved them and she was proud to have something that her siblings did not have. I give them two thumbs up because the product delivers! It does what it says it will. No doubt about it. Even though Emily is older and already knows how to use utensils, she made less of a mess with these, which is something worth buying for in my opinion!

Customer Service As Cold As Fries

Wednesday night we had a late night at church, so on the way home we stopped at a fast food joint for dinner. Emily was already asleep so I decided to drive through and just take it home to eat. We were in the drive through and proceeded to wait there a good 15 to 20 minutes after placing our order before getting to the first window. The money taker was very friendly and replied when I said hello. She carried on conversation with me and was very well-mannered and polite.

PhotobucketAs I moved on to the pick up window I did NOT have the same experience. I always say "Hello" when I am in the drive through. I was raised to respect everyone and use my manners and greet people when I see them. She did not even acknowledge my existence. She never looked me in the eyes. She proceeded to hand me my drinks. At least she did have all 5 of them in a cup holder. Of course after waiting 15 minutes in the drive through line I waited another 3 or 4 there while they figured out which food was mine. Then she shoved it at me and turned her back away from me. She not once even said a word to me. I was nothing but nice to her and in return got horrible customer service.

To top it off, as I was pulling out, I grabbed a french fry out of the sack and they were as cold as ice and had obviously been sitting a while. I don't know why in the world we would have been served cold fries if the place was that busy that we'd be sitting in a line full of people for so long. But, I was not about to go back, unload all of the kids and go in to complain.

When we got home, the only thing warm was Brien's sandwich. Everything else looked (and tasted) like it had been sitting there for hours. Thankfully we were all so tired and hungry we didn't complain too much. But it really got me to thinking a lot about customer service. It seems like anymore, especially at eating establishments it's just overlooked. More important than the food being prepared correctly, I care about customer service. If I have someone who is nice and caring waiting on me then I am most likely not going to complain about something. But, if they are already being a jerk or acting like they don't care, why should I?

I posted this on my Facebook and got a lot of input on the subject. Apparently it's something that others struggle with as well. Someone mentioned that if I worked there would I not be cranky and the answer is simple, "NO"! It shouldn't matter where you work or what you do, you should always take pride in yourself and your work. Never treat people with disrespect and handle yourself with class...even in a fast food drive through! You never know, you could be serving your future boss some day.

I think that businesses should stand back and take a long hard look at their customer service and see how they can strive to improve it. In today's down turned economy, it could potentially increase their business! Wouldn't you rather go somewhere you knew you were going to be treated well over some place where you aren't?!

Looking @ The Sky on Friday

LATSOF,Looking at the sky on Friday
This was the view from my back yard this morning as the sun was rising! It was a beautiful morning with a bit of an overcast sky creeping in, so I was glad to be able to capture this image. It's getting to the time of the year where the weather is pleasant and one can stand to be outside and snap photographs! I am getting excited about fall! Hope you are too. Can't wait to see what you all come up with for your LATSOF entries!

Happy Birthday Emily

Photobucket
Two years ago today my third child was born. Emily Grace has truly been a gift from God. We thought our family was complete after our second child. Thankfully our plans were not the same as the divine plan God had for us. He blessed us with sweet little Emily and I can't imagine our family without her!

Emily's new ride:  Princess 4 Wheeler
I remember when I was pregnant people would ask me what I wanted to have and I thought that I would like to have a boy since Tyler would be closest in age to the new one.  As it turns out God gave me what I wanted only in another girl!  Emily is what you'd call a "Tom" boy.  She loves to play with cars.  In fact we got my nephew a monster truck for his birthday and she insisted that I open it because she thought it was hers!

The truck chants:  "Big Foot, Big Foot" - so she danced!
She's so sweet and she's such a talker. She loves her big brother and sister and she's quite the daddy's girl. I can't imagine our family without her. What a joy she's been in our lives. We are going to celebrate her birthday on Saturday with her cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents.  Happy Birthday sweet Emily Grace.  We love you to pieces!

Age Doesn't Make You Forgetful, Does It?!?!

Photobucket
Should I be worried that I am 32 years old and I've lost my car twice this week in the Wal-Mart parking lot?!?! Seriously, I am not talking about just walking out and being in the wrong aisle only to realize that I was one aisle over. I am talking about walking around on the hot asphalt with the sun beaming down full force almost in tears using my key ring "clicker" to hear my van or see the flashing lights!!

Today it happened and I began by chuckling when a few folks laughed and asked, "Did you lose your car?". At first, I just laughed and remembered that I was on the phone with my sister when I pulled up and I must have just forgotten where I parked. I knew I had a fairly close spot, because I was excited about being by the door. I had to go to the restroom, so I kept thinking that I went in on the side where the restrooms were closest. Unfortunately, after about 15 minutes of endless, frantic searching I realized that it clearly wasn't the case!

Finally after searching every aisle on that side, I went to the other and there it was! I think that a light shone down from heaven with a big arrow pointing me to the van when I finally saw it! I could hear trumpets sound and all was well. Of course I was still hot, sticky, and completely embarrassed! I am serious when I say that I was almost in tears thing that someone had stolen my mini-van! Why on earth would someone want to steal a mini-van?! I have no idea, but surely a 32 year old mother of three would not just lose it, right?!?!

Earlier in the week I did the same thing.  Only I was on the right side, just wasn't walking down far enough.  Oh, and then there was a few weeks ago when the entire family (hubby drove) went to Wal-Mart and when we started out I reminded him that we were on the other side.  There's no sense in walking around in the heat anymore than we have to, so we walked out and there was NO van.  Finally hubby chimed in that we were on the other side.  I argued a bit that he was wrong and then decided to flatter him because by this time I think that I'd lost 10lbs in sweat.  When we found the van, he was beaming from ear to ear because he was right and I was wrong.  I couldn't be angry, because I was never so happy to see an air conditioned vehicle!

Now, this leads me to my concern.  I  mentioned that I am still fairly young.  Forgetting where I left my keys, shoes, purse, etc...that's one thing, but forgetting where I left my vehicle, I would place that in a slightly larger category of things that one should not misplace!!  Thankfully, all three kids are accounted for (I think!!) and I haven't lost one yet.  But, I'm not making any promises with this mind of mine.  It is CrAzY ya know!!!  In the meantime I'm contacting "The Hoff" to inquire purchasing KIT, the talking car so when I am ready to go he can meet me at the door!  ;)
